HDS – New Lab

Hitachi Data Systems
New Lab

Location: Santa Clara, CA
Type of Contract: Full BIM Design

Detailed Scope of Work

Advance Design Consultants was hired, as a prime, to provide design services for the complete renovation of the new lab project. ADC proposed a unique design that took advantage of free cooling with minimal modifications to existing facility operations. The core principal element of the design was to utilize a water-side economizer paired with custom in-row rack coolers and cold or hot row containment to provide the ultimate low-energy design. Based on ADC’s experience with similar designs, HDS new computer lab was able to achieve a PUE of less than 1.06 during optimal outdoor conditions. Advance Design Consultants was hired, as a prime, to provide design services for the complete renovation of the new lab project. The technical approach differed from the previous system, but provide flexibility and interconnection into the existing IT infrastructure. The new design will only support the new lab and will keep the exisitng systems in operation. The intent of ADC’s specifications with a dedicated pump system to feed a new dedicated tempered water piping system to feed the project area. The piping headers can be oversized to allow for full integration later as the office space is transferred over t the new lab, ADC designed densities up to 15kw per rack. In-row-cooling unites will be utilized as tempered water will circulate through the main headers out to the data center rows. These rows are to be arranged in a hot/cold aisle arrangements and it is recommended to install custom spec-in-row coolers that will locally provide cooling airflow in front of the servers.

This design does not require a chiller, which increased the efficiency and provides ADD free cooling, with less components and a simplified design. This directly translated to less facility maintenance, higher equipment efficiencies and the lowest energy consumption at a low construction cost.
